New Delhi, Jan. 17 -- The recent announcement that the GST Council is further easing the compliance requirements for SMEs will come as good news for the sector, which is acknowledged as the growth engine of the Indian economy. There is a collective sigh of relief now that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has raised the sales threshold for GST registration from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 40 lakh. This is just one in a series of initiatives unveiled by the government aimed at easing the constraints faced by SMEs.
