ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 1 -- United States Patent no. 11,973,455, issued on April 30, was assigned to AeroVironment Inc. (Arlington, Va.).

"Bi-stable, sub-commutated, direct-drive, sinusoidal motor controller for precision position control" was invented by Michael Leonardi (Simi Valley, Calif.) and William Nicoloff (Camarillo, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An electric motor controller system for modulating requested motor torque via oscillating the instantaneous torque, including a bi-stable torque controller; a proportional-integral (PI) velocity controller a proportional-integral-differential (PID) position controller; and sinusoidal zero-velocity table mapping."
