Rio De Janeiro, April 19 -- Thiago Carpini has been sacked as manager of Sao Paulo after the team's poor start to the season, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Thursday.

The announcement came less than a day after Sao Paulo's 2-1 loss at Flamengo, a result that left the six-time Serie A champion 19th in the 20-team standings.

"[We] announce the dismissal of head coach Thiago Carpini following a meeting with the board this morning," read a statement on Sao Paulo's official website.

Carpini, 39, led Sao Paulo to seven wins, six draws and five defeats after replacing Dorival Junior in January.

He will be replaced on an interim basis by assistant coach Milton Cruz.
