Gandhinagar, April 20 -- A total of 227 candidates have submitted nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, alongside 13 candidates for the state assembly bye-elections on the last day of filing nominations.

Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer P. Bharti announced the numbers in a statement on Saturday. The last day for filing nominations was Friday. A total of 26 parliamentary constituencies in PM Narendra Modi's home state will face voting in the third phase on May 7 when 5 crore voters will cast their votes.

The nomination process began on April 12. Between April 12 and 15, a total of 31 candidates filed their nominations for the Lok Sabha elections and four candidates for the assembly bye-elections.
