India, April 25 -- Among the world's premier tourist destinations, Venice is currently knee-deep in the throes of mass tourism. In 2022 alone, the historic centre hosted a staggering 3.2 million overnight tourists, outstripping its resident population of just 50,000. To address this concern, Venetian authorities have implemented a long-considered solution: an entry fee for day-trippers.

Debated since 2019 but postponed several times, the day trip fee will officially go into effect on April 25, 2024. This EUR 5 (USD 5.35) fee will be mandatory for all-day trippers entering Venice between 8.30 am and 4 pm. Inspectors positioned at various checkpoints of the UNESCO World Heritage Site will be responsible for verifying compliance.
