India, Feb. 3 -- The latest data on cancer burdens, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), paints a somber picture for India. With over 14.1 lakh new cancer cases and more than 9.1 lakh deaths with breast cancer emerge as the leading cause in the country. Globally, 2 crore new cancer cases and 97 lakh deaths were estimated.

But what is more worrying, as revealed in the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) survey from 115 countries is that a majority of them have failed to adequately fund essential cancer and palliative care services, crucial components of universal health coverage (UHC).
