Bhubaneswar, May 3 -- On this day (May 3) in 1913, India ventured into the cinematic universe with Dadasaheb Phalke's first feature film titled 'Raja Harishchandra'. This silent film featuring Dattatraya Damodar Dabke, Anna Salunke, Bhalchandra Phalke and Gajanan Vasudev Sane, is based on the legend of Raja Harishchandra which was portrayed by Dabke. Dadasaheb Phalke took the responsibility of scriptment, direction, production design, make-up, film editing, and film processing. The film was first released to a select audience for reviewing, as criticism towards the new venture was already spreading. The film had its theatrical release on 3rd May 1913.
