The video-sharing app TikTok is suing the US government over a law that would ban the social media company in the United States unless it is sold by its Chinese parent.

TikTok and its parent ByteDance filed a petition in a federal court in Washington DC on Tuesday to overturn the law.

The lawsuit says the legislation violates the US Constitution and its guarantee of freedom of speech.

It also says the sale demanded by the law is not possible commercially, technologically or legally.

In April, the Senate passed a bipartisan bill to ban TikTok if ByteDance did not sell the company by a fixed deadline. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law.
