The birthing season for deer has now begun, and observers are keeping their eyes on herds of wild deer that roam around a park in the ancient capital of Nara in western Japan.

Japanese sika deer in Nara Park have been designated as a "natural monument" by the central government.

Officials from the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation said they discovered on Sunday that the season's first baby deer had been born inside a deer protection facility that is operated by the foundation.

The female baby is regular in size, weighs 3.6 kilograms and is about 56 centimeters long.

The foundation announced later that six baby deer had been born inside the facility as of 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
