TOKYO, May 8 -- NHK World issued the following news:

Japanese gaming giant Nintendo says it will announce the follow-up to its smash-hit Switch console by the end of next March.

The company says it is most appropriate to continue in the video game platform business by offering both hardware and software.

Nintendo has sold more than 140 million Switches around the globe since its debut in 2017.

Meanwhile, the firm posted a record group net profit of just over 490 billion yen, or about 3.1 billion dollars, in the last fiscal year that ended in March.

Games were strong sellers and a movie featuring the popular Mario Brothers characters was a box-office hit. The weaker yen was another factor in pushing up profits.
