Kolkata, Jan. 17 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today remembered former Chief Minister and Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu on his eighth death anniversary.

"Remembering Jyoti Basu, former chief minister of Bangla, on his death anniversary," Ms Banerjee posted on her social networking page.

The Marxist leader, who ended Congress rule in West Bengal in late 60s and finally ousted in late 70s, was born as Jyotirindra Basu on July 8, 1914; and ruled the state for five consecutive terms, died on this day in 2010.

He served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal state from 1977 to 2000.
