Dhaka, Jan. 16 -- General Secretary of Awami League Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said, the AL will contest in the upcoming Upazila Parishad election without any alliance.

"We won't form any alliance in this regard," he said.

The minister said this in a meeting of Awami League's Dhaka North unit held at the party's Dhanmondi office.

The Election Commission is likely to announce the election schedule on February 17 for 50 parliamentary seats exclusively reserved for women. The Awami League, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, won an overwhelming majority in the December-30 national election.

The ruling party and its alliance secured 96 per cent of seats in the 300-member parliament while BNP and its allies won only eight seats.
