THIMPHU, Jan. 16 -- The population of Bhutan's capital Thimphu will increase by 4,200 people annually, according to population projections by the National Statistics Bureau (NSB), Kuensel reported on Tuesday.

This will make Thimphu the most populated city by 2047, with at least 30 per cent of the country's population, around 263,152 people, settled in the capital. Thimphu is the only city today with a population over 100,000.

In three decades, more than half of Bhutan's population will live in urban areas.

The NSB projects that Paro, Chukha, Sarpang, Samtse and Wangdue Phodrang will have a population over 50,000 by 2047, with Paro becoming the Himalayan kingdom's second largest city.
