Mumbai, Jan. 6 -- The Punjab National Bank's (PNB) complaint against Nirav Modi was politically motivated and done to avoid the banks' liability towards co-bankers, the fugitive jeweller's lawyers alleged in court, while responding to the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) plea to declare him a fugitive economic offender.

Nirav Modi's lawyers, Ashul Agarwal and Vijay Agarwal filed the reply on Saturday.

The ED is probing a Rs14,000-crore fraud case against Nirav Modi and his associates.

On the question of why he has not come back to India, Nirav Modi's reply said he could not do so as his passport was revoked by the Indian government.
