SHIMLA, Jan. 9 -- The employees of Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) on Tuesday held a state-wide protest against the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2018, which is likely to be presented in Parliament during the ongoing winter session.

The strike was in response to a nation-wide call by the National Co-ordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE).

Addressing the protesters at the board headquarters in Shimla, the general secretary of HPSEBL employees' union Hira Lal Verma said, "The proposed bill, if implemented, will open the electricity distribution sector for cherry-picking by private suppliers, pressing the poor and low end consumers to pay more for consumption of electricity."
