Guwahati, Jan. 14 -- In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the two regional parties of Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party (SP) currently headed by Akhilesh Yadav, and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of Mayavati, had been so soundly trounced by the BJP, that their survival was put to question. It may be recalled that the BJP swept those elections by winning 71 seats while its ally Apna Dal won two. The SP came a distant second with just five and the Congress a poor third with two, while the BSP failed to win any. The emphatic win of the BJP in the UP Assembly elections reinforced the feeling that regionalism had had its day in the State.
