Sri Lanka, Feb. 10 -- Health and Industries Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana yesterday (09) said that a welfare State cannot be maintained forever.

"At present we are moving forward as a welfare State because the people of this country are in a very difficult situation.

The government has doubled the concessions given to the public. Rs. 180 billion is spent for subsidies, 450 billion for health, and about 350 billion is spent on education. Rs. 1,000 billion have been spent on education, health and social welfare programmes. Efforts have also been made to resolve land issues." said the Minister.
